The lower falls approach is a 2.0-mile round trip with about 500 feet of elevation gain, rated easy. It reaches a swimming-hole style waterfall rather than the taller upper falls, and is the more approachable of the two Whiteoak Canyon hikes on this site. Dogs are permitted.
This trailhead uses a private lot with a self-pay station (card or exact change) — not the National Park Service fee system used elsewhere in Shenandoah. In July, expect coolers and a teenage crowd around the swimming hole; a weekday visit or an October trip is a genuinely different, quieter experience. This is one of three separate hikes in Whiteoak Canyon on this site — see also Whiteoak Canyon Upper Falls and the longer Cedar Run–Whiteoak Circuit, which links both canyons into one demanding loop.
