Museum of the Shenandoah Valley

The Valley’s most serious art museum, with free admission every Wednesday.

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is the region’s real answer to a rainy day for adults who’ve already done the caves — proper gallery space, an 18th-century Glen Burnie House, formal gardens and trails, all on one wooded Winchester campus. General admission is $15, but it’s free every Wednesday.

It’s a genuinely long drive from Luray — about 75 to 80 minutes each way — worth it specifically for visitors who want a real art and history museum rather than a roadside attraction, and who have a full day (or an overnight) to spend on it. Not a stop to squeeze into a tight schedule. Galleries are open year-round; the gardens and Glen Burnie House close for winter, open March through December only.
