Duncan Knob

A free 3.5-mile hike in the Massanutten range ending in a genuine boulder scramble to a 360-degree view rivaling Bearfence — with far fewer people.

Duncan Knob is a 3.5-mile round trip with about 1,152 feet of elevation gain off Crisman Hollow Road (FR 274) in the George Washington National Forest, free to hike. The last 200 yards is genuine hands-on scrambling over house-sized boulders to a 360-degree summit view that rivals Bearfence Mountain with a fraction of the visitors.

Dogs are welcome to the base of the scramble, but the final boulder section is not realistic or safe terrain to bring one along — plan on leaving a dog with someone, or turning back together, once the trail turns to real rock scrambling.
