Belle Grove Plantation

A 1797 limestone manor with a real Civil War headquarters story, about an hour from Luray.

Belle Grove’s 1797 manor house served as Union headquarters during the 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek, and the guided tour — capped at 12 guests, about an hour — leans into that history rather than treating the house as furniture alone. The grounds and gardens are free to walk on your own.

It’s a real drive from Luray — about an hour (62 minutes by the actual road route) — worth it for the specific Civil War story and the scale of the property, not a casual add-on. Closed for the winter (Dec 31–Mar 19); open Saturday–Sunday only in November; regular season hours resume Mar 21. Not every part of the property is wheelchair accessible — call ahead with specific access questions.
